rain forest necklace

The above necklace has been featured in BEAD TRENDS magazine/booklet April 2011 issue. You will find photos and How To Instructions on pages 100 and 101. The necklace is made using all recycled materials, including old painted canvases and recycled denim jeans. To the left of the photo is a tiny peek of a purse that I made to go with it.

beyond about face

Art Unraveled is just around the corner and I will be teaching a class on how to paint portraits in watercolor for beginners. The name of the class is About Face, and the sample can be viewed HERE. Once the technique is learned you will be able to go beyond that simple painting. You can use the drawing and the technique as inspiration to take it further into mixed media collage and jewelry making. The above mixed media painting was inspired by the class sample, and the necklace was inspired by the mixed media painting. If you are attending the class, I will give you all the information on how I take a simple piece of art, and take it beyond.

Santa Fe Necklace

A big THANK YOU to each of you who have taken the time to visit and leave such nice comments. The Bead Soup hop is far from over...I'm close to the half way mark. I am trying to touch base with each of you, though I have run into a couple of blogs that are private. I thank those of you who have emailed me private and those who have become followers. A big hug to all of you.

The soup is done...what fun it was to make.

My partner Charlene Sevier sent some beautiful"soup ingredients". My challenge was scale and value. The lovely silver focal was almost the same size as the turquoise beads, so I made a polymer and faux enamel piece to carry the silver focal pendant. I wanted to use the almost white bead that was included, but it looked too light in value, so I dyed it and bundled it in silver wire with dots to match the clasp and the pendant. I chose not to use the dark small beads.

Note: For whatever reason the whole post disappeared, twice. I apologize for this, we are trying to fix the problem.

I inherited a box of neckties and I have turned some of them into fun chunky bangles. They are lightweight, chunky fat, and fashion fabulous.

More chunky bangles, this time I used vintage fabrics and sari silk. Yes...they too are chunky fat, flexible, and fashion fabulous.

abs feb 2011 challenge

Hand crafted collage beads is what I made for the February 2011 Art Bead Scene challenge. The cuff base plate is collaged and heavily sealed for wear. Visit the Art Bead Scene site to see what inspired this wrist cuff.

bead soup

This will be my first time at the BEAD SOUP PARTY. I am partnered with Charlene Sevier. You can see her work here. Thank you Charlene, I just received the bead soup packet... beautiful colors...if any of you are familiar with my work, she really has given me a challenge. She asked that I send her bead soup packet at the last day of the month being that she is at the Tucson Bead Show...lucky her.

Keeping busy making components for my art jewelry designs. The above necklace has hand crafted beads, tiny water media art pieces, a tassel made from silk that I brought back from Japan when I taught there, and a hand crafted flower from vintage silk...all attached to a hand crafted raw silk cord. The real thing has a lot more magenta tones that actually reads red in the photo.....

After incubating forever it seems, I finally pulled out the unfinished painting and gave it some finishing touches. Paintings that incubate seem to know when it is their time to become a work of art.

5x5 collage

Sometimes you find yourself without a live model, that's when I go to my photos or in this case an image from a magazine. Use the image to inspire your drawing...be mindful of copyrights. Do not draw an identical image. This 5x5 painting is enhanced with collage and stamping. The background is an altered watercolor, stamped with parts of a rubber stamp image from my own line. My stamps are available here. The veil is collage from handmade parchment paper.

As you probably heard on the news, Arizona, the valley of the sun, had lots of rain, hail the size of golf balls that caused major damage, and two tornadoes in one day. I was about 20 minutes from my house when it hit, and what normally would have been a quick trip, took me three hours and fifteen minutes through flooded roads, heavy traffic, and no street lights. Pretty scary!
What does this have to do with the above photo? Well, the next day I had to replace a tire and this is part of the tire yard. Composition found it's way into the photo and I could not have designed it better. The white area is a great lead in to the bits of color on the upper third of the composition. Subject does not matter when the design works.

Yes... I have gone way out of the box and am enjoying every minute. I am using a very limited palette and doodle art. The hardest thing was allowing the human face to morph into an animal like figure.

This piece has been incubating forever...I pull it out once in a while and add more layers of paint and stamps. It has been turned so much that I'm not sure where that first layer is any more. I am starting to like it...maybe one day it will be a finished painting...maybe.

this is not ordinary art

I make hand painted canvas and denim purses, yes... they have a copyright. Some are as large as a messenger bag. Seven year old Kayla walked in one day and went directly to this bag. Oh grandma she said "did you make this book bag for my birthday?" Of course I said yes. Little does she know that she is probably the only second grader with an original, expensive book bag. She loves it...

As you know...except for a few teaching collages and small ones at that, I have not painted for at least 18 months. That's how long it has been since my granddaughter Nicole passed and since I lost the lease to my studio. I have mainly dedicated my time to making art jewelry for teaching and for my ETSY store.
This morning I had the pleasure of looking at a blog by an awesome artist. Her portraits are such an inspiration that I had paint something immediately. The above paintings are the result. Thank you Myrna for inspiring me. I invite you to view her work here...you too will love what she is doing.
