playing my way

Title: THE INTRICATE VEIL
Size: 22 x 30
Watercolor and Acrylic
My method of playing is called Free Play. I teach this method to help the students "loosen up" before they start planning a drawing. Many times I am asked if it is collage...no, just layer upon layer of manipulated paint.
As you can see in most of my mixed media paintings, I love to use the element of line. And, the figure or a face is usually drawn somewhere within the layers.
This painting is available for purchase.

mixed media

I have not posted a painting in quite a while...it's time. This painting was started in almost total darkness, allowed to incubate for a few months before it was picked up again. This time I drew the figure, worked out the composition and finished it in less than three hours. Seth from The Altered page has features some of my work...check out the artist's registry on his website to see some fabulous work by more than 95 artist's. You can start by clicking here.

recycled redefined recreated

Title: THE BLUE BOUQUET

An antique brooch of flowers in your favorite color of blue, each centered with diamonds....faux of course. The pin back on the brooch wandered off, so now it shines as a pendant on this delightful necklace of mixed metals, beads, charms and a couple of safety bundles that hold the vintage chains in place. A vintage blue glass bead, a small metal cross and a tiny heart dangle ever so delicately from a found metal circlette. The chain is 28 inches long so it does not need a clasp. The dangling fringe measures 2 inches below the pendant. This item is available for purchase. Contact artwithmoxie@cox.net

frottage collage

Title: CENTER OF THE CIRCLE
Size: 6x9
Mixed Media Frottage
Frottage: Spanish from frotar - to rub. French from frotter - to rub. Also called rubbings, a technique of creating a print by rubbing crayon, or pencil over a tactile object placed underneath a thin paper. Crusade 21 challenge is to make a resist using crayons. For this Frottage Collage, I used Encaustic Wax. I also wrote a mini tutorial on the Frottage Collage process. You will find posts one through four of the tutorial here.

the crow

Title: THE CROW
Size: 11x15
Mixed Media
Those of you who attended the first session of Exploration Mixed Media at The Artist's Nook might recognize the background to this painting. I demonstrated my method of Free Play using watercolor, an art stamp, colored pencils, tinted text papers, and an incising tool on watercolor paper. Upon my return to Arizona, I drew a crow on a branch, using the line meet line method of drawing, to unify the shapes. The second session of Exploration Mixed Media will be held in July 2008. New sample photos and workshop information can be found here. Please join us for three days of play.

the warrior

Title: THE WARRIOR
Size: 22x30

For years I have used a palette of sixteen colors. Eight warm and eight cool. The assignment for this workshop was to paint a 22 by 30 watercolor using only the warm side of the palette. Also, emphasis on the use of strong color values. No wimpy wishy washy pastels for this assignment. This painting has been SOLD.

no highbrow stuff

Title: NO HIGHBROW STUFF
Size: 5x5
Mixed Media Collage
In art I pull no highbrow stuff, I know what I like and that's enough...William W. Woollcott I love this quote so I included it in this collage. Emphasis on this week's class demonstration was to use text on the collage, but to integrate it into the design. Layer upon layer of transparent hand made papers make up most of this collage.

flores de maria

Title: FLORES DE MARIA
Size: 15x15
Medium: Transparent Watercolor
I painted this watercolor to honor my aunt Maria. She had the most beautiful flower garden. I always thought that she was blessed with magical powers because she could plant a rock and it would grow for her. She planted banana trees in the front yard of her home in Arizona that actually produced bananas. She lived to be 100.

This tiny piece of art is available for purchase.

deliberately mismatched

He called her Daisy, she was a daring and mysterious soul who loved romantic encounters. He enticed her by gifting her one earring at a time...to keep her interested and waiting so he thought...but she wore them beautifully mismatched, she waits for no one.
Deliberately Mismatched is my new line of earrings born from a collection of single orphaned beads, odd handcrafted beads, creative stuff, and charm swaps.
They will soon be available for purchase.

The shadow side of yellow is a demonstration and painting done last night for my Wednesday class. It is a combination of watercolor, ink, fluid acrylics and transfer done over tissue collage.

the bead buffet

THE BEAD BUFFET is a necklace that came to be because I have this not so great habit of tossing orphaned beads into a box as I am working. In lieu of sorting, I decided to use them as they were...I found beads of all colors and sizes, charms I made and a couple from a swap, a pendant with a clay face, buttons, sewing notions, pearls, handcrafted faux resin beads, and much more. It is eye candy and conversation all wrapped in one. This item is definitely one of a kind and availabe for purchase. contact: artwithmoxie@cox.net

Title: ELEMENTS AND IMAGERY
Size: 22x30
Watercolor
This is one of my favorite pieces. The line drawing was exaggerated using a tool called "ink in a pencil" with emphasis on line, shape, and pattern.
