Title: TEXAS GOLD
Mixed Media Necklace
This item is available for purchase by contacting artwithmoxie@cox.net .
As some of you already know, I suffered the loss of my granddaughter Nicole three months ago. and if that were not enough I lost the lease to my studio a week later. I have not had the energy to look for a new space or even to post on my blogs as often as I would like...I know you will understand. I am working on my jewelry line and a few small art projects from my in home studio. I will keep you posted on the new works and give you information on up coming workshops on this site and on http://createwithmoxie.blogspot.com . Items for sale can also be found on http://moxiegallery.etsy.com/ .
The necklace on this post has an element from a charm exchange and a piece of sea glass embraced with fantasy film.

watercolor portrait

This is a sample of what I do with left over demo pieces. The demonstration was about reverse printing, collage and over spraying. Months later, I used the demo piece to teach a beginner watercolor portrait class. I love the marks where the reverse printing became part of her hair, some will see the marks on her face as mistakes...I see them as creative opportunities. I will be teaching these techniques this fall in Fort Collins , Colorado. Check this site and here also for workshop information.

playing my way

Title: THE INTRICATE VEIL
Size: 22 x 30
Watercolor and Acrylic
My method of playing is called Free Play. I teach this method to help the students "loosen up" before they start planning a drawing. Many times I am asked if it is collage...no, just layer upon layer of manipulated paint.
As you can see in most of my mixed media paintings, I love to use the element of line. And, the figure or a face is usually drawn somewhere within the layers.
This painting is available for purchase.

mixed media

I have not posted a painting in quite a while...it's time. This painting was started in almost total darkness, allowed to incubate for a few months before it was picked up again. This time I drew the figure, worked out the composition and finished it in less than three hours. Seth from The Altered page has features some of my work...check out the artist's registry on his website to see some fabulous work by more than 95 artist's. You can start by clicking here.

recycled redefined recreated

Title: THE BLUE BOUQUET

An antique brooch of flowers in your favorite color of blue, each centered with diamonds....faux of course. The pin back on the brooch wandered off, so now it shines as a pendant on this delightful necklace of mixed metals, beads, charms and a couple of safety bundles that hold the vintage chains in place. A vintage blue glass bead, a small metal cross and a tiny heart dangle ever so delicately from a found metal circlette. The chain is 28 inches long so it does not need a clasp. The dangling fringe measures 2 inches below the pendant. This item is available for purchase. Contact artwithmoxie@cox.net

frottage collage

Title: CENTER OF THE CIRCLE
Size: 6x9
Mixed Media Frottage
Frottage: Spanish from frotar - to rub. French from frotter - to rub. Also called rubbings, a technique of creating a print by rubbing crayon, or pencil over a tactile object placed underneath a thin paper. Crusade 21 challenge is to make a resist using crayons. For this Frottage Collage, I used Encaustic Wax. I also wrote a mini tutorial on the Frottage Collage process. You will find posts one through four of the tutorial here.

the crow

Title: THE CROW
Size: 11x15
Mixed Media
Those of you who attended the first session of Exploration Mixed Media at The Artist's Nook might recognize the background to this painting. I demonstrated my method of Free Play using watercolor, an art stamp, colored pencils, tinted text papers, and an incising tool on watercolor paper. Upon my return to Arizona, I drew a crow on a branch, using the line meet line method of drawing, to unify the shapes. The second session of Exploration Mixed Media will be held in July 2008. New sample photos and workshop information can be found here. Please join us for three days of play.

Title: NO HIGHBROW STUFF
Size: 5x5
Mixed Media Collage
In art I pull no highbrow stuff, I know what I like and that's enough...William W. Woollcott I love this quote so I included it in this collage. Emphasis on this week's class demonstration was to use text on the collage, but to integrate it into the design. Layer upon layer of transparent hand made papers make up most of this collage.

flores de maria

Title: FLORES DE MARIA
Size: 15x15
Medium: Transparent Watercolor
I painted this watercolor to honor my aunt Maria. She had the most beautiful flower garden. I always thought that she was blessed with magical powers because she could plant a rock and it would grow for her. She planted banana trees in the front yard of her home in Arizona that actually produced bananas. She lived to be 100.

the bead buffet

THE BEAD BUFFET is a necklace that came to be because I have this not so great habit of tossing orphaned beads into a box as I am working. In lieu of sorting, I decided to use them as they were...I found beads of all colors and sizes, charms I made and a couple from a swap, a pendant with a clay face, buttons, sewing notions, pearls, handcrafted faux resin beads, and much more. It is eye candy and conversation all wrapped in one. This item is definitely one of a kind and availabe for purchase. contact: artwithmoxie@cox.net

the circus

Title: THE CIRCUS
Mixed Media Necklace
An After Midnight sponsored Art Challenge
Zeborah Loray started a new trend of paper folding that everyone calls Geo Deco's. After Midnight Art Stamps held a challenge using this free form process. We were given a one and one half by two inch piece of burlap, a tiny black rubberband, and a small wooden cocktail pick. The objectitve was to use the folding process along with these items to create a piece of art. We were allowed to add whatever we wanted, but must include these three items in the work. The folded Geo Deco in my piece was made from an energy drink can. The rubber band is tied beneath the ball where the elephant stands, the wooden pick stands behind the elephant, and the burlap is hidden in the handmade faux resin beads. Vintage chain, washers, a twig, buttons and a charm from a charm swap make up the rest of the necklace. More Geo Deco's may be seen at www.amstamps.com

The one of a kind copyrighted piece incorporates Opal designs along with original drawings, found objects, wire, and bead embellisments.

gun control

Title: HE WHO HAS THE GUN CONTROLS
Size: 22 x 30
Medium: Mixed Media
Sometimes paintings that are not pretty have the most emotional impact. Look closely and you will see a person being shot from behind. This painting is from a workshop demonstration. The objective was to take a news item from a news magazine or newspaper that did not contain a photograph, and interpret your vision onto watercolor paper. The article I chose was written about an eleven year old who did not want to attend school for fear of guns and gangs. On the bottom right corner is the phrase, "He who has the gun controls"

Title: Flowers for My Mother
Size: 22x26
Medium: Mixed Media

My mother was one of the most creative persons I have ever known. She taught me to create with whatever was available at that time and... she taught me how to make the most beautiful and realistic paper flowers. This painting is dedicated to her for I used parts of demo paintings, one of which had flowers.
These scraps were part of an outdoor experimental workshop and, one of a demo using ink and watercolor crayons. The rest is from the "incubation" pile.

jeff

Title: Jeff
Size: 11x15
Medium: Watercolor
What does one do with a painting that is not working? You can throw it in the garbage or you can let it incubate. You can cover it with gesso or you can cover it with collage. The painting above was an unfinished demonstration of tropical nature. I washed off the paint leaving a ghost image, dried it, turned it upside down and used it as a substrate for the drawing of Jeff's portrait. His amber colored eyes were the inspiration for using the substrate that had been incubating for quite some time. The painting is done in transparent watercolors.
