bead soup ingredients

These are the wonderful bead soup ingredients that my partner Rhea sent. I love the dusty turquoise with the copper beads. I immediately knew what I wanted to do with the focal bead, and then...I discovered that the hole of the bead was closed in the middle of the bead. The bead reamer did not make a dent, so now I'm in for a real challenge. Think I will look at the beads for a while.

southwest stack

I made jewelry for gift giving but had to keep these four for myself. I love the colors of the Southwest as much as I love wearing stacks of bracelets. The first bracelet from the left, is made from a zipper, the second one, is made from recycled beads, polymer clay, and sari silk. I love the burnt orange color of this bracelet. The third bracelet is free form peyote using recycled beads. The forth bangle is made from antiqued brass wire and an orphaned turquoise bead. More inspirational stacks may be seen here.

Looks like I have become an eco friendly artist. I have not bought any supplies in three years and vowed to use what is available. I love being inventive, I love transforming something totally different from something else. The above double bracelet stack are prototypes for upcoming classes.

This is the outcome of several elements that I have been saving. The wire caged geode is a beautiful rich coffee brown that reminds me of Cuban coffee. All other elements have been repurposed.

2011 bead soup reveal

Title: Midnight in Santa Fe

I made two necklaces with the beautiful beads that my pardner CJ Bauschka sent me. The large black donut has a beautiful pitted surface but because of the pitting, the edges were a bit jagged, especially where the middle hole once was. I was afraid that any beading or cording could break with wear. After staring at the bead for several days. I decided to turn it into a cabochon of sorts.
I bead embroidered the edges to take away some of the jaggedness, and I made a bezel to house some of the turquoise and hide the hole of the donut. I made a three inch fabric bead inspired by Paula Best, embellished it with colored fibers, seed beads and the small pieces of turquoise. A black leather like cord slides through the fabric bead to which the donut, now cabochon, is attached. I used the large silver drop bead as a dangle.
I liked the silver clasp so much that I chose not to use it on this necklace. Instead, it became a charm on the second necklace.

Title: South of the Border Spice

This is the second necklace from the many beads CJ sent. I love the clasp as a charm. I made and attached a spicy red resin bead and a single little black bead to one end of the clasp. Silver seed beads and three wonderful large red teardrop beads became a tassel. A large turquoise bead to which I attached a long flat ivory element became another charm. All these dangles are attached to a large round black bead embellished with a little red fabric bundle. This necklace is about movement , so I attached everything to a long leather like cord. Still have some beads left over, hoping to make another piece later.

Finally got back to creating after meeting the teaching deadlines. Grabbed my sewing kit, sat down, put my feet up and made the softest little cuff you will ever wear. Made of striped silk, lace, tiny beads, vintage buttons and a puffy little flower with a pearl...faux, of course. And, I made a little resin bead to add as a charm.

Will soon add it to my Etsy shop.

devine madness

Divine Madness is the name of this necklace, though it's not been so divine rushing around trying to meet teaching deadlines, create a piece for the Bead Soup when your mind draws a blank. I actually ended up with two. Plus, trying to beat the 110 degree weather. When it gets so hot you can't think, the best thing to do is roll mindless paper beads. All the beads on this necklace are handmade...the paper beads rolled and heavily glazed, and the round beads handcrafted from resin. As you can see, no two beads are alike, what fun, and yes it is Divine Madness.

arizona dust devils

Dust Devils... a vortex of dust filled air created by extreme heat. These small and some not so small whirlwinds can be spotted just about anywhere in Arizona. I was putting together a small fabric collage panel for the front pocket of a small poets journal bag. When I finished, I realized that I had metaphorically painted a panel of dust devils, thus the title. The poets bag is available for purchase or can be seen at vendors day Art Unraveled.

fabric wrist cuff

After daaaaays of not being motivated, I found a box of fabric that "kicked me in the seat of my pants" and got me creating again. I remember watching my grandmother "paint" with a needle and thread. Actual beautiful thread paintings that she framed. That's where my love of fibers came from. This cuff is a result of that memory. The other side of the cuff has three beaded dangles and a few other beads tucked here and there for added sparkle.

Title: ROMANCING THE BUTTON

The cuff that I chose to make is light and easy to wear. I combined wire, textured poly clay, a hand crafted faux enamel bead, silk, a tiny brass charm, and two buttons.

Buttons sent by my partner, the lovely Marti Conrad. A large rust color ceramic button stamped and glazed with a beautiful frosty blue glaze. A wood flower shape button in beige, edged in rust, and three lovely textured glass buttons which I chose not to use at this time. They may become earrings later.

The above necklace has been featured in BEAD TRENDS magazine/booklet April 2011 issue. You will find photos and How To Instructions on pages 100 and 101. The necklace is made using all recycled materials, including old painted canvases and recycled denim jeans. To the left of the photo is a tiny peek of a purse that I made to go with it.

Art Unraveled is just around the corner and I will be teaching a class on how to paint portraits in watercolor for beginners. The name of the class is About Face, and the sample can be viewed HERE. Once the technique is learned you will be able to go beyond that simple painting. You can use the drawing and the technique as inspiration to take it further into mixed media collage and jewelry making. The above mixed media painting was inspired by the class sample, and the necklace was inspired by the mixed media painting. If you are attending the class, I will give you all the information on how I take a simple piece of art, and take it beyond.

The soup is done...what fun it was to make.

My partner Charlene Sevier sent some beautiful"soup ingredients". My challenge was scale and value. The lovely silver focal was almost the same size as the turquoise beads, so I made a polymer and faux enamel piece to carry the silver focal pendant. I wanted to use the almost white bead that was included, but it looked too light in value, so I dyed it and bundled it in silver wire with dots to match the clasp and the pendant. I chose not to use the dark small beads.

Note: For whatever reason the whole post disappeared, twice. I apologize for this, we are trying to fix the problem.

The above necklace has hand crafted beads, tiny water media art pieces, a tassel made from silk that I brought back from Japan when I taught there, and a hand crafted flower from vintage silk...all attached to a hand crafted raw silk cord. The real thing has a lot more magenta tones that actually reads red in the photo.....

Sometimes you find yourself without a live model, that's when I go to my photos or in this case an image from a magazine. Use the image to inspire your drawing...be mindful of copyrights. Do not draw an identical image. This 5x5 painting is enhanced with collage and stamping. The background is an altered watercolor, stamped with parts of a rubber stamp image from my own line. My stamps are available here. The veil is collage from handmade parchment paper.

As you probably heard on the news, Arizona, the valley of the sun, had lots of rain, hail the size of golf balls that caused major damage, and two tornadoes in one day. I was about 20 minutes from my house when it hit, and what normally would have been a quick trip, took me three hours and fifteen minutes through flooded roads, heavy traffic, and no street lights. Pretty scary!
What does this have to do with the above photo? Well, the next day I had to replace a tire and this is part of the tire yard. Composition found it's way into the photo and I could not have designed it better. The white area is a great lead in to the bits of color on the upper third of the composition. Subject does not matter when the design works.

Yes... I have gone way out of the box and am enjoying every minute. I am using a very limited palette and doodle art. The hardest thing was allowing the human face to morph into an animal like figure.

As you know...except for a few teaching collages and small ones at that, I have not painted for at least 18 months. That's how long it has been since my granddaughter Nicole passed and since I lost the lease to my studio. I have mainly dedicated my time to making art jewelry for teaching and for my ETSY store.

After returning from a very successful art gathering, Artiscape in Columbus, Ohio...I took a wonderful one line class with Mary Ann Moss on making a journal from fabric and papers that have been incubating forever....this is the first attempt, a gift for my cousin Teresa who was kind enough to house me and taxi me around Columbus. Thank you Teresa.

The cover of the journal is a scrap of upholstery fabric and the inside of the cover is a place mat, and yes, that's me in the photo.....

The white on white embossed paper pocket is made from off the wall materials...will put up a tutorial on my other blog soon.

Junk mail, lotto ticket, collage papers, doilies, photocopies, and the never ending number 13.
Other pages contain old airline tickets, photos, receipts, my own photocopied art, encaustic scrap paper pieces, and lots of pockets and writing space.

This painting started out as a demonstration on texture and ended up unfinished in the incubation bin. Months later it was retrieved and the process continued. The unfinished piece had the feel of standing pools of water and weeds...just the place for some kind of bug or insect.
The grasshopper was drawn on a separate paper, painted, and collaged. Adjusted the overall values and ta daaa a new painting was created.

This is my favorite way to work... a blank canvas, a variety of painting tools, absolute quiet, and no preconceived idea of what may or may not turn out. After about three days of free play, the symbols began to appear, each one silently whispering to me, I continue to glue and paint, add and subtract until the shapes and symbols take a life of there own. Sometimes an emotional healing will take place, or a message is conveyed to me or the viewer. At this time I know that it's time to move on...to create something new.

Hot colored wax, shimmering foils, images, bits of text, ephemera, and layers of transparent glazes are what make these mini collages fabulous. Small enough (3x3.5) to display on tiny spaces, adorn an altered journal cover, or as an artful hanging ornament. The first part of the class will be dedicated to the basics of painting with hot colored wax. I will show you how you can paint a landscape in 60 seconds and how to make monoprints of your work. The second part of the class will be dedicated to designing three or more mini collages using the monoprints. I will furnish the wax, the thermal tools and paper. Many years ago before I became a painter, I was a hairstylist. I had a friend, teacher, mentor, and trainer named Mario Olivarez. He was an innovative award winning stylist who mentored many. I was one of the lucky ones who did not mind getting pushed into entering hair styling and haircutting competitions. Because of him I won seventy some awards competing throughout the country and made the USA Hairstyling Team Competition. Much later, before he passed, he gave me a little bag filled with turquoise. I recently made this necklace in his honor. Thank you Mario for believing in me...we all miss you.

No....I did not do a painting of jeans. But, for almost three months, as I stayed home with a horrible cough, bug, who knows...I would look at the pile of jeans thinking I must get rid of them. Then I would think of my mother who could create anything from nothing, say to me, "use them to make something". So, with scissors in hand, I started cutting them up... along with scraps of painted canvas, buttons, thread, and who knows what. I started to create what is now a new line of Western Chic accessories, hand bags and jewelry that include denim and hand painted canvas. These are being well received....let's see what happens. This is a sample of what I do with left over demo pieces. The demonstration was about reverse printing, collage and over spraying. Months later, I used the demo piece to teach a beginner watercolor portrait class. I love the marks where the reverse printing became part of her hair, some will see the marks on her face as mistakes...I see them as creative opportunities. My method of playing is called Free Play. I teach this method to help the students "loosen up" before they start planning a drawing. Many times I am asked if it is collage...no, just layer upon layer of manipulated paint.

As you can see in most of my mixed media paintings, I love to use the element of line. And, the figure or a face is usually drawn somewhere within the layers.
